Sisters
Today I worked with Beka and Liz, two sisters who are both expecting daughters...Liz will give birth on Monday and Beka in May! It was finally a gorgeous day here in Dallas, and the sisters were ready to pose when I arrived.

Mom and Dad even got into a picture or two!

And look what a beautiful great-grandmother-to-be!!
Here's a whole new meaning to the phrase "balancing act!"
This is a beautiful handmade baby quilt that was the mom-to-be's when she was born. How nice to use it for the new baby!

Thanks, ladies! I look forward to photographing some babies real soon!

It's a New Year!
I have been so remiss about blogging lately. It seems like December skated by on an ice-covered holiday pond, and then it was gone. I did quite a few photo shoots during the month for Christmas cards, which kept me quite busy.
During the month of December, I lost two very dear friends...both good young men with so much left to do with their lives: Johnny Price and Chris Renderman. They had really only started to live; one was 22 and one was 32. I can't even pretend to understand why this happened, and only now am I starting to feel a little less sad. They say time heals, although I'll never forget either of these two shining stars.
So please forgive me for stepping back for a bit. Here are a few of my favorites photographs I took in December. I'm getting back in the swing of things now, selling more of my photo note cards, and getting ready to start scheduling photo shoots again. I already have two weddings to do in 2011.

Wishing all of my readers the very best of health and happiness in 2011.

Hewitt and Marie
My mother, who is 79 years old, works out at the local wellness center in the small Alabama town where she lives. A few years ago, she befriended the man on the treadmill next to her (not unusual, for those of you who know Mom; she's a flirt). This man, however, is 94 years old, and has been happily married for almost 65 years. On my last trip home, she took me to meet "Hughie" and his wife, Marie.
They live in an immaculately kept brick house with a winding driveway. As we drove up, a local grocer followed us; he was dropping off some dinner rolls for them. We knocked at the back door, and waited. When the door finally opened, Hughie hugged my Mom, and introduced himself to me. It was hard to believe he is 94. He ushered us in to meet Marie, who was sitting on the couch in their den awaiting the Auburn and Alabama football game. It was made clear that they're Bama fans...
They were both so excited to see us, and were really the picture of good health. Marie could hardly wait to tell me their story, and I wanted to share parts of it with you.
In the summer of 1932, a mutual friend introduced them. They both attended the same high school, and while they didn't immediately fall in love, they started slowly in that direction. He played football, and after a game one evening, she waited for him to shower and dress, before going on their first date to Mac's Cafe. They had pie and a Coke. Can you imagine remembering something like that all those years ago?
Hughie went away for work that summer, but Marie didn't date anyone else. They "picked right up" when he returned home, but eventually he went into the Army, where he was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He asked a friend of theirs to go with Marie to choose an engagement ring, which she still has. Hughie returned home on December 26, 1945, and they were married March 7, 1946.

The ceremony took place at her parents' home by their Methodist minister. She wore a soft blue suit, while he chose a dark suit. They first lived upstairs in her parents home in an attic that was partially finished. During hot summer nights, they took their mattress outside on the roof and slept under the stars.
Eventually, they moved to Tuscaloosa, where he attended the University of Alabama and received his civil engineering degree. She worked for the Boy Scouts, and went to college later in Mississippi. Throughout the years, his job took them all over the world, before they eventually retired and moved back home.
When I asked Marie what the secret to their long, happy marriage was, she replied "There was nothing difficult about it. If you truly love each other and are dedicated to a relationship, it is easy." They weren't able to have children, and she regrets now that they didn't adopt. But her main regret is "that I don't have many years left with my husband."
We left soon afterwards so they could watch their football game. I felt honored to have shared a few minutes of their lives, yet wistful that I'd never found what they have. I don't think many people do.

An Afternoon in Deep Ellum
I spent this afternoon in Deep Ellum, which is near downtown Dallas. The area originally became distinguished as a prime jazz and blues hot spot in the South. Artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie "Ledbelly" Ledbetter, and Bessie Smith played in Deep Ellum clubs like The Harlem and The Palace. In 1937, a columnist described Deep Ellum as:

Deep Ellum is a great place to do a photo shoot. Seventy years after its heyday, it still has a lot of character. Today, I worked with Lizzy, Chris and the boys. We walked all over, and it was a gorgeous autumn day, with breezes that keep the leaves rustling down the streets. Here are a few of my favorite shots:"...[the] one spot in the city that needs no daylight saving time because there is no bedtime...[It is] the only place recorded on earth where business, religion, hoodooism, gambling and stealing goes on at the same time without friction...Last Saturday, a prophet held the best audience in this 'Madison Square Garden' in announcing that Jesus Christ would come to Dallas in person in 1939. At the same time a pickpocket was lifting a week's wages from another guy's pocket, who stood with open mouth to hear the prophecy..."

A Brand New Life
Yesterday I photographed the labor and delivery of a client of mine. I'd done her maternity shoot last month, and it was planned that if I could be at the hospital, I would. The timing was perfect, and it was a pleasure to work with Bonnie and Mark again.
This was my first labor and delivery shoot, but it couldn't have gone more smoothly. Bonnie was a trooper, especially considering that this was her first child, and she'd had a very difficult pregnancy. I was amazed at the teamwork that went on at the hospital...the nurses and the doctor were incredible! The baby was delivered in Bonnie's room. Somehow, I'd imagined a cold, sterile operating room!
Here are a few photographs I wanted to share. They were taken right before or literally minutes after the birth of Alexandria, who arrived a happy, alert little girl, all of six pounds.

Tom and Owen
Is there anything cuter than a boy and his dog?? I spent some time this morning doing a Christmas card photo shoot of my dear friend, Tom, and his sweet pup, Owen. It was easy to get in the spirit! Owen is part Rat Terrier (yes!) and part Corgi. We rescued him near Abilene some time back. He was a little shy today, but I like to think that he secretly enjoyed the attention. On the way home, I even put on a little Christmas music in the car! Merry Christmas early, y'all!
